Karsten Thormaehlen learned his craft in the worlds of international fashion and design. After studying Philosophy, Art History and Communication Design in Mainz and Wiesbaden, Germany, he started his career as an art- and creative director in New York, where he developed campaigns for international luxury brands and worked with famous photographers such as Peter Lindbergh, Pamela Hanson, Nathaniel Goldberg or David Sims. Artistic photography played an important role in his work from early on. Since the 1980s he has shown photographic work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad, including shows at Kunsthaus Hamburg and Zollamtsaal/MMK, Frankfurt, Germany.
